Miss Ruston,

I heard that a savingram dated 5th December from C. in C. Hong Kong giving the latest figures of the staff position had come in and therefore delayed my reply to your request for information.

20:

Up to 5th December 473 members of the Hong Kong Civil Affairs Staff had arrived. These consisted of 100 officers, 45 civilians of officer status, 11 nursing sisters, 290 British other ranks including clerks, storemen, medical and stores technicians and the bulk of an R.A.S.C. Transport Company and 27 civilians not of officer status. The latter include police inspectors, sanitary inspectors and relief workers.

Four civilians and a small number of British other ranks are en route by sea.

77 are at present en route by air. These consist of 20 officers, 9 civilians of officer status, 46 nursing sisters and 2 police inspectors.

Four civilians are awaiting sea passages.

to leave by air in January.

35 police inspectors have been engaged in Shanghai and are presumably now en route for Hong Kong.

It is estimated that in the latter half of January some 100 Hong Kong government servants recently released from internment will be fit and available to return to Hong Kong by air.

I have omitted to mention that an additional 154 British other ranks have left this country by air and St are being sent direct from India.

These figures do not include a number of candidates who have been selected but whose appointments have not yet been finalised.
